Tips for Buyers and Sellers

Verso Homes - Safe Vacation Tips
By Natalie Boyle, REALTOR®, Founder of Verso Homes (DRE #01329012)
Before you hit the road this summer, it’s not just about packing sunscreen and sandals—it’s also about protecting your home and your digital life from vacation-season scammers. As travel picks up, cybercriminals and fraudsters look for signs you’re away, from unsecured Wi-Fi to real-time social posts. Here are practical steps you can take before and during your getaway to keep your property and personal data secure.

Use Public Wi-Fi Wisely

Public Wi-Fi may be convenient, but it’s often not secure. Cybercriminals exploit hotel, airport, and café networks to intercept your data. If you must connect, use a trusted VPN (Virtual Private Network) to create an encrypted “tunnel” that protects your activity from prying eyes.

Wait to Post Vacation Photos

Announcing your vacation in real-time is like putting a “nobody’s home” sign on your door. Avoid posting location-tagged selfies or flight details while you’re away. Instead, save the highlight reel for when you return—or limit your audience using strict privacy settings.

Protect Your Empty Home

Vacant homes aren’t just burglary targets—they can also be exploited in fraud schemes. Some scammers forge documents to rent or sell homes they don’t own. Here’s how to reduce risk:

  • Use timers for lights and smart home systems
  • Pause mail and package deliveries
  • Ask a trusted neighbor to check in periodically
  • Ensure your real estate agent is aware (especially if your home is listed)
  • Consider title insurance to guard against title fraud
Pro Tip: Let your neighbors know you’ll be away, and consider parking a car in the driveway to maintain the appearance of activity.

Update Your Wi-Fi and Devices

Still using your router’s default password? Hackers love that. Change it to something complex and unique. Also, double-check your smart home devices and cameras—make sure firmware is updated and access is secure before leaving town.

Privacy at 30,000 Feet

Before you stow your tray table, put your phone in airplane mode to disable location tracking and wireless activity. You can still connect to in-flight Wi-Fi, but limit your online use and avoid accessing sensitive financial accounts mid-air.
